New York 1923 – 1994

One of the most profound abstract expressionists of the twentieth century, the American artist Sam Francis (1923-1994) is considered one of the first painters after World War II with an international reputation. Francis created thousands of paintings, works on paper, prints and monotypes, which are part of large museum collections and institutions around the world. Considered one of the leading interpreters of color and light, his work contains references to New York’s abstract expressionism, color field painting, Chinese and Japanese art, French impressionism and his own Bay Area roots.He traveled and studied extensively, and had studios in Bern, Paris, Tokyo, Mexico City, New York, and Northern and Southern California.

Francis had a broad interest in not only art, but also technology, psychology, science, medicine and environmental protection (before it became a movement).
